I have chosen to participate in the Wilderness Heals Hike supporting the Elizabeth Stone House and wish to update everyone on my progress up until the hike and thereafter. Every June/July more than 70 women will hike for 3 days in the White Mountains of New Hampshire to help other women in need. The Elizabeth Stone House (ESH) is a feminist, alternative mental health program and battered women’s shelter. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, it provides residential and community-based services to women and children seeking refuge from violence. The Stone House—which is run by women, for women—offers a sanctuary where residents may heal and reclaim control over their lives. By providing an environment that fosters peer support and programs that enable residents to re-enter mainstream society, the Stone House strives to prevent institutionalization and further victimization of women in emotional distress.
